Well hey there internet
Now, I am incredibly grateful for the fact that my skin has never
been through any horrific phase of acne (thank you to whoever did that) but I have
definitely had some phases where my skin has not looked good at all and when I was
around 14 I definitely started getting spots so before they got any worse I thought
‘Nope. Stop right there!’
So before I get onto my tips I thought I might as well give
you some background information.
I have really sensitive skin, so I hardly ever wore
makeup because back then (even though it was only a few years ago) it wasn’t as
easy to find lightweight makeup that not only wouldn’t give me an allergic
reaction but was also budget friendly as I was only 14 and I did not have a lot
of pocket money to spend. Even to this day I don’t wear eyeshadow because it
irritates my eyes, foundation can only go on certain places on my face
otherwise it will cause hives and make me itch like crazy and even my eyeliner
can irritate me from time to time.
Therefore I thought the next best thing would be to have flawless
skin so I wouldn’t really have to wear makeup baring in mind this is 14 year
old me thinking this so I wasn’t the brightest spark.
As a result I have learnt some very useful tips that have
sort of been right under our noses the whole time.
Now enough of this rambling!
Tip number 1- Get to know your skin!
Figuring out what sort of skin you have is an important factor
in helping you get awesome skin. Seeing as though it is the largest organ you
have it makes sense to know how it works and what type of skin you have whether
you have dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin etc. You’ll probably find that you
won’t fit into a specific category because you’re a mixture of all of them or
some of them. Everyone has different skin so it doesn’t really matter if you’re
skin is not like someone else’s.
So I spent a long
time trying to figure out what my skin does on certain day or how my skin reacts to different weather
conditions or where I break out on a certain time of the month (if you know
what I mean)
For example I have mainly dry skin but my eye area, around
my nose and just below my lip are places that are really oily, the rest of my
face is really dry and even flakes at times and on top of that my skin is super
duper sensitive so when I buy products I make sure it refers to the skin type I
am targeting e.g. the parts of my skin that are dry.
Tip number 2- Be healthy!
Like I said before, your skin is an organ. And whether or
not there is scientific proof that certain foods help or don’t help your skin,
there is no harm whatsoever in eating healthy, drinking lots of water and
getting plenty of sleep. If you thought of it in terms of your other organs you
may just reconsider your eating habits.
Let’s take your heart for example, if you were constantly
eating fast food and drinking fizzy drinks and you stopped for a second to
think about what you’re doing to your heart you would reconsider your diet
wouldn’t you? Well it’s similar to your skin.
No I’m not saying that you should stop eating chocolate
because I would never be able to do that myself but I know when I changed my eating
habits I, at first, substituted something not so healthy with something
healthier like fruit.
Tip number 3- Switch it up!
If you have been sticking the same routine for quite a long
time then try to switch it up. Sometimes my skin can get too used to a product
if it’s been used a lot. It’s like my skin is saying ‘been there, done that’ and
it’s almost as if they become immune to whatever I’m using so whenever I run
out of a product I try to opt for something new instead of going back to the original
product, unless it’s really good.
Also if a product is not working for you then don’t use it! It
doesn’t matter whether everyone is raving about, if it’s not working for you
now (and I mean it makes you break out more) then it won’t really work for you
a week or a day or a month later.
Tip number 4- Be patient!
As much as we want it to, our skin will not miraculously
look flawless overnight.
Be patient when finding your perfect skin routine. Be
patient when eating and being healthy, that one day you were healthy does not mean you don't have to be healthy for the rest of your life. Keep going and persevere. You may not notice it
at first whether you’re skin is improving but other people will and when they
compliment you saying “you have great skin!” then you know whatever you’re
doing is working.
But it doesn't mean you stop once you think everything is
ok, make sure you're routine is regular and that you don't slack in any areas.. You want to keep your skin looking amazing don’t you?
In conclusion, to answer the question “what’s your skin
secret?” I would say that for me there is no secret, it’s just paying a little
more attention to the solutions we have right under our noses.
Question of the day: What would you say is your skin type?
